Atlantech Online - Fiber Ring in Fairfax, VA
February 10, 2021
Atlantech Online has made quite a bit of progress on a fiber ring that we are building out in Fairfax, VA. The ring will add over 40 miles of fiber to our dark fiber network. The ring will connect the Arlington ring that I wrote about last week to Equinix in Ashburn, VA. Atlantech Online has had a presence at Equinix for about 20 years. It has long been a meet-me point for Internet Service Providers, telephone service carriers and also cloud services such as AWS and Azure. Anyone who is anyone "on the Internet" is at Equinix, including Google, Apple and Cisco.
Initially, Atlantech Online will add six buildings to our dark fiber network along the Fairfax ring. Look to see more here soon about these newly lit building. Along the ring route, we have the potential to add over one hundred additional office buildings in the months ahead.
This is important for business because when Atlantech Online already has fiber facilities within a building, there is considerably less effort involved to deliver service to that building’s tenants. Since our network is already connected to on premise facilities and so we don’t have to battle through the engineering and physical construction from our nearest fiber splice into the building, the result is it makes the provisioning of fiber services to tenants even easier. Additionally, service is less expensive and there is a much shorter install timeframe, which can really make a difference for businesses that need services turned up in a hurry.
The benefit to our customers is that the dark fiber route can provide tremendous bandwidth and redundancy to their operations. Additionally, it provides direct access to our telephone network. Atlantech Online is a phone company and has been a registered CLEC since 2005. And, as mentioned above, customers can use our CloudConnect service to get to the cloud provider of their choice including AWS, Azure, Google and Alibaba. We can typically turn up those connections within a week.
